Help From An 8th Grader

After our article came out in the ADN, an eighth-grade student from Fairbanks wrote to us asking if there was something she could do. She was moved by our story, and distraught at the thought of her own dogs ever suffering such as those described in the story. Instead of a donation of money, food, or doggie items, we asked her to create some educational posters that we could put around our village. We gave her some ideas, but she researched, composed and created the posters that I have photographed. She has offered to continue making educational posters as topics come to mind. She also created some great bookmarks with different themes that we will be distributing all over the village at our fairs, our little library, and the book fairs that the schools have each year.

Canine Comfort Profiled in ADN

In the February 26th edition of the Anchorage Daily News, Canine Comfort and the hardships animals face due to neglect and abuse were discussed and an excerpt is included:

Finding half-dead puppies lying on the floor of a shed at 40 below with no food, water or bedding did not go over well with Kathy Sweeney of Aniak. But when this Yup’ik grandmother picked one up to check it over and part of its frozen tail fell off, that was the last straw.

No more silence. Now anyone who neglects or abuses an animal in her village is going to be hearing from her. The family responsible for these puppies did.

They’d gone upriver for several weeks, leaving their dog and her newborn pups to fend for themselves. Sweeney learned later there had been 14 in the litter. By the time she intervened, 10 had frozen to death.
